Marine Biotechnology uses marine organisms and ecosystems to develop new products and technologies in fields such as medicine, food, agriculture, and industry. Innovations range from pharmaceutical discoveries to sustainable materials inspired by ocean life via biomimicry.
Ecotourism promotes responsible travel to marine and coastal environments that support conservation efforts and benefit local communities. By encouraging sustainable tourism practices, ecotourism helps protect natural ecosystems while boosting economic opportunities.
Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) focuses on enhancing the ocean's natural ability to absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Emerging techniques range from changing the chemistry of seawater to enhance CO2 absorption to growing “blue carbon” habitats such as mangroves or seagrasses to sequester significant amounts of carbon.

Too often, economic and investment decisions are made before we fully understand the systems they affect or the long-term risks they may create. Yet understanding something as vast and elusive as the ocean is no small feat, proven by the fact that less than approximately 0.001% of the world's ocean has been visually explored.
That gap in knowledge presents both a challenge and an opportunity.

Both depend on understanding how ocean systems fundamentally operate, so that innovation, investment, and conservation work together to support long-term prosperity,” said Dr. Vincent Pieribone, OceanX’s Co-CEO and Chief Science Officer.

Through the Science Impact Challenge, collaborative hackathons, and science expeditions aboard the OceanXplorer, OceanX is pushing the needle on ocean innovation, and supporting breakthrough approaches to how we communicate marine science and enable greater impact.
The Science Impact Challenge is an OceanX program that invites graduate students and emerging professionals to reimagine how we understand and communicate ocean science in support of a sustainable Blue Economy. Participants work with complex ocean science datasets to create innovative prototypes, from visualizing the water column to integrating biological, physical, and geological layers of the ocean into immersive three-dimensional experiences.
The winning team earns the opportunity to bring their ideas aboard the OceanXplorer, testing their solution in a real-world, at-sea environment.
